"The beautiful merlot settee was the catalyst for this entire shoot. Seeing the dark maroon tones of the velvet padding complimented by its oak arms and legs immediately piqued my interest and caused a flood of ideas, so I began building the shoot in my mind centered around this elegant piece of aged furniture. I envisioned a bride sitting there in a vintage lace dress beneath a full-grown oak tree with lanterns hanging above her surrounded by flowers and natural, rustic accents. It seemed a bit farfetched given where we live, but wherever you are, there are always little pockets and hidden gems not far from away where you can fulfill little daydreams.
Up the Ortega Highway, no more than half an hour from the Pacific, a protected wilderness preserve lies in the shadows of the Santa Ana Mountains. With natural groves of oak and California Sycamore this seemed like the perfect place to make this idea a reality. With a handpicked selection of vendors we all convened in the preserve and brought the idea to life.
Centered under an arm of an oak we decorated the handmade farm table made from reclaimed wood with a moss runner, gold trimmed vanity mirrors and brass candlesticks. A large weaved basket with antler handles was filled to the brim with lush flowers and locally foraged greenery and vintage china and silverware were adorned with classic stationary and jade pebble details. Lanterns were strung from the overhanging branch and fashioned with poke weed, spray roses, black succulents and hanging amaranths. A chalkboard cake rested nearby on a wooden desert cart decorated with gold leaf garland and unripe pomegranates. The bride and groom were dressed in a vintage, off white laced gown and muted suit with dark maroon accents from the shoes, socks, make up, boutonnière, and custom floral crown. We captured the scene as the sun disappeared to the west and managed to place the beautiful couple beneath a rising moon in the California wild." -Jessie Schultz Photography
